Hello,
I would like to have an Unpublished Dissertation type. There is currently nothing that quite meets the APA standard. Here is the APA standard:
Lastname, F. N. (Year). Title of dissertation (Unpublished doctoral dissertation). Name of Institution, Location.
The type Thesis gets close. It even has a Status field, but unfortunately this field does not show up in the formatted reference list.
If this could be added or if there is a convenient workaround, I would appreciate it.
Thanks,
zazzman

I did not know there is such a thing like an unpublished dissertation. What does it mean? In principle every dissertation is published by the University, right? Does it mean it is not published by a publisher as book? Also, do you know if this is an APA specific thing or other style guides know this type as well?

Stefan,
I’m most familiar with APA. In the APA 6th Edition, section 7.09, page 211 the topic of “Unpublished and Informally Published Works” is covered. As for MLA, I did a quick Google search and found this: http://www.cws.illinois.edu/workshop/writers/citation/mla/unpublisheddissertations/ . I don’t know if that helps or not.
I think this could be fixed by having the Status field show up in the citations, but that’s just my 2¢.
Thanks,
Josh
