When you add the paperpile add-on to google docs, the icon/shortcut does not appear in the side panel. This would be much more convenient than having to access paperpile through the menus.

You’re right—having the Paperpile button right in the Google Docs sidebar add-on would be more convenient than having to dig into the menus, but since it is a Google Workspace add-on accessed through the Extensions menu, I’m not sure if this can be changed. I have asked the team.
The alternative is to use the Paperpile extension in Google Docs, where you can click the P button in the toolbar or use the keyboard shortcut to insert citations.
