I remember an option in Endnote once, that it was able to detect user-defined tags in the document (e.g. square brackets:  where the number is PMID ID) and parse them semiautomatically to insert proper citations (assuming that the paper with given PMID ID is in the user’s library) in corresponding places. That eases citation management if you collaborate with multiple people and ask them simply to insert PMID codes (or any other: doi etc) without destroying citation formatting which can be done at the final stage.
