Better compatibility for open in default viewer

I think how current opening in browser’s viewer handled is preventing many Chrome extensions for PDF to be triggered. For example, Google Scholar reader.

On the websites, like ScienceDirect, click on view PDF, Chrome extensions can be automatically triggered, but choosing open PDF in default viewer from paperpile will not.

In my view, making opening PDF in default viewer behaves more like other website, e.g. ScienceDirect, will allow paperpile plays well with other useful tools, and enable some easy integrations. I would like to hear the staff’s thoughts on this.

I understand that paperpile is developed by a small team, such that many features can’t be implemented. However, the paperpile getting in the way of me using some free tools is rather frustrating.

Thank you for your feedback, @Emrick. If I open PDFs directly in ScienceDirect, the Google Scholar reader is triggered. Do you mean that you would like the option to open PDFs in your Paperpile library directly in third party readers like Google Scholar reader?

Thank you for your response. Yes, I would like to open PDF directly in third party readers, e.g. Google Scholar reader. This will make some useful functionalities available, such as AI outline, or show reference on popup window. I’ve seen both these features and the Scholar reader itself being requested by others as well.
