Hi! Wondering if/when Chicago Manual of Style 18th edition will be added to the options for paperpile? I’ve tried uploading CSL files for it I’ve found online (like this one)—but I just get an error message saying to try again later.
Am I doomed to spend my life deleting publisher locations, book chapter page numbers, etc.?
Thank you for sharing the CSL file for Chicago Manual of Style 18th edition (author-date) @akvbroek. Our citation styles come from the public Citation Style Language (CSL) repository, and that version hasn’t been released there yet. It can take some time for new citation styles to appear.
Paperpile has a 100 KB limit on custom CSL uploads, so the original file was too large. We trimmed comments and blank lines to bring it down to ~90 KB, and it should now upload without issues. I’ve attached the reduced file below.
How to install it
- Download the attached file.
- In Paperpile, click your profile picture in the top right and go to Settings > Citation styles
- Select the downloaded file and click Upload CSL file under Custom citation styles
You should be able to start citing with the uploaded style right away in Google Docs and Word.
When the CSL community publishes an official Chicago Manual of Style 18th edition style, it should be added to the built-in list automatically.

Life saver! Thank you! I didn’t even think about file size. (I was assuming there was some errant semicolon somewhere lurking in the file lol) Honestly, I am editing two books right now and this is going to save me an enormous amount of time.
