Google OAuth error 401: deleted_client – OAuth client was deleted

Hi everyone,

I’m encountering a Google OAuth authorisation error with Paperpile and wanted to check whether anyone else is experiencing the same problem or knows how to resolve it.

When Paperpile attempts to authorise access to my Google account, Google displays:

Access blocked: Authorisation error

The OAuth client was deleted.

Error 401: deleted_client

Request details: flowName=GeneralOAuthFlow

The Google account itself is working normally, and the wording of the error seems significant. As I understand it, deleted_client normally means that the OAuth client ID being used by the application no longer exists in Google’s OAuth configuration, rather than there simply being an expired token or a permission that I need to grant again.

Has anyone else started seeing this error recently?

I’m particularly interested in establishing whether this is:

  • a Paperpile-side OAuth configuration issue;
  • related specifically to the Paperpile/Google Docs integration;
  • an older Paperpile OAuth client that has been retired while an existing installation or session is still attempting to use it; or
  • something that can be resolved by forcing Paperpile to initiate authorisation using its current OAuth client.

I’m reluctant to start removing Paperpile permissions from my Google account, clearing existing integrations, or otherwise resetting things without knowing whether that is actually relevant to a deleted_client error.

If someone from the Paperpile team sees this, could you please advise whether there has been a recent change to Paperpile’s Google OAuth clients and whether there is a recommended procedure for resolving this?

I’ve also submitted the issue to Paperpile Support, but I thought I’d post here in case other users are encountering the same problem.

Any advice or confirmation from others seeing Error 401: deleted_client would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Marcus

Thanks for reaching out here, @sunday9pm, and for sharing all these details with us. The OAuth client has been restored, so this should now be resolved.

Please try signing out of and back in to Google Docs. You do not need to remove Paperpile from your Google Account’s third-party access as that won’t help with this error. If the error persists, let us know.

As a workaround, you can switch to the new (beta) Paperpile Google Docs plugin, which is unaffected.
