Dear Paperpile,
I got a problem with the in-text citation ordering. It changes to descending order after I click format citation from the menu (see the pictures). Is this something to do with the formatting style?
Thank you very much.

Hi
I’m not from paperpile, but…
the order of the references within your document (the in-line referencing) is normally determined by the Citation Style. (The order in the bibliography is also set there but the two sort orders are independent of each other)
I know this as I’m just in the middle of trying to write a citation style (CSL) to suit my university’s particularly awkward style which includes having them in date order in the in-line text (so I’ve had to change the sort order for the text).
You can make your own custom Citation Style at:
http://editor.citationstyles.org/about/
You only need a bit of logical coding knowledge and you should be able to puzzle it out - you can use an existing citation style and just edit it. Then save it locally to your computer, then in the paperpile settings you can upload your saved custom style.

Andy
Hi Andy,
Thanks for your reply. I’m using The Open University (Harvard). I’ve gone through the CSL file on this link “http://www.zotero.org/styles/the-open-university-harvard” and I didn’t find any attribute forcing to sort intext citation in descending order. That’s why I create this post.
Cheers,
Winai
Hi
Just looked up “The Open University (Harvard)” (same style as it links to the same zotero link) in the CSL editor (the link I showed) and the in-text sort is there as: sort by year/date and then by author-short (i.e. author surname).
What order do you want it in?
Its a matter of moments to change it. Give me your email and I’ll email you a copy of the edited CSL if you like
Andy
Edit: Just deleted the sort order for the in-line text from the CSL and then saved it to my computer as a new CSL called “the-open-university-harvard_No_Sorting.csl”
Then under “Citation Styles” in the “Settings” section of Paperpile (cog icon in top right corner) I clicked “Upload CSL file” and uploaded the new CSL I created.
Quick test in google docs to check it works and yes it keeps the insertion order but still sorts the references in the bibliography at the end.
CSL in private message.

Hi Andy,
That’s great. I will test it. Thank you very much.

No Problem, hope it works… but most academic outputs would normally sort the inline text entries - mine have to be sorted by date normally.
Double check the publication specs for where ever you are writing for in case you end up needing to sort them anyway!
Andy
Hi Andy,
I’ve checked and tested it. It works!!! Thanks a lot.
