Issue with Adding pdf from IEEE

It seems there’s issue with adding PDFs from IEEE.

Even I have access with my university, that I can open pdf from IEEE website, paperpile will still show restricted when I use “find pdf online” function to add PDF.

I also couldn’t add pdf with the extension when I open the pdf on IEEE. The extension couldn’t read the metadata properly. Even when I manually select the reference, it will show “Error attaching PDF”.

Furthermore, it seems that paperpile doesn’t utilize the PDF that Google Scholar attached next to the reference link. Despite there’s a pdf link next to the reference, paperpile also often couldn’t add pdf automatically.

Hope this can be resolved soon. Thanks.

@Emrick is this the case with any/every IEEE paper you try to import to Paperpile, both via the extension and when using the Find PDF online function? If it’s happening with specific papers, please share some sample URLs.

If it’s happening with all papers, by now perhaps you’ve already tried:

  • Signing out & back in to Paperpile & Google
  • Signing out & back in to your proxy
  • Restarting the browser
  • Trying from another browser

Let us know.

The issue seems inconsistent. I think it’s also related to how paper is added. Take the paper below for example. I add the paper through paperpile button from Google Scholar search, but the PDF is not added automatically.

Improved Estimation of Eigenvalues and Eigenvectors of Covariance Matrices Using Their Sample Estimates | IEEE Journals & Magazine | IEEE Xplore

At the page above, click on extension, there is no option to add the pdf.

If I try to use find PDF online, it shows

But I can access the PDF through IEEE website. If open the PDF, and click on the paperpile extension, it couldn’t load the metadata properly:

If I click on the “save to paperpile”, it still can’t add the pdf.

However, it seems to work properly, for other papers, not this one, if I add paper directly from IEEE website, i.e. without adding paper from Google Scholar search first.

Could you look into these issues? Thanks.

Thanks for the details, @Emrick. The team is looking into this but our proxy specialist is out of office until next week, so we will have more insight into the matter upon his return. Will share an update then.
