Keep getting PDF sync error on iPad

When I download any new PDF file and start reading it, I keep getting “There was an error syncing this pdf”. When I click resync, the same error reappears a few seconds later, and when I click cancel, the PDF file I was reading immediately disappears.

I tried restarting the app, clearing local storage, logging out and in, but the problem persists.
