Unable to export to JSON with large library (timeout?)

Hello,

I am trying to export ~8,000 entries to JSON using the following steps:

  1. Select all entries (Ctrl-A)
  2. Choose … at the top
  3. Export → JSON

Then, I just got “Preparing file for download…” and waited for may be 5-10 minutes but nothing happened. The JSON export in the previous UI, even with a large number of entries, appeared to be quicker.

Here is a screenshot

Got this error in the console eventually

I am using Paperpile web v67 (9c896a)
Chrome (MV3) extension v1.5.765 (bfd9a9)

Any advice would be much appreciated.

@zhao.paperpile thanks for the detailed report. Could I trouble you to try exporting to RIS as well, to see if the same happens? A possibility is that Chrome is blocking the download attempt, in which case an icon would appear in the address bar like below. Click it to allow download to proceed.

Let us know if that works or if it is not the case.

Thanks @vicente. The RIS export was very quick (a few seconds). However, the problem with JSON still persists, and there was no icon in my Chrome address bar when the timeout happened.

Let me know if you want me to try something else.

Thank you for trying the RIS export, @zhao.paperpile. Can you try the JSON export again, but this time after it fails, can you send us the debug logs via the extension in case they contain information that might help the team investigate further?

To send the logs, right-click anywhere, go to Paperpile > Send debug logs, and click Send logs.

After that, can you try exporting to JSON in smaller batches and letting us know how that goes?

Thanks @suzanne. I had sent the debug log once it timeout.

Also, I tried JSON export with 1 item and ~20 items, but none of them work unfortunately. However, I discovered that if I select all items in my library (~8000 items), there was a message displayed “Preparing for…” at the bottom of the browser, but this message is not displayed when exporting small amount of items (1 item and 20 items).

I checked my Chrome site settings, and all are set to the default values.

More information - I tried Safari, the behaviour is the same! So I don’t think it happen particularly in Chrome. RIS and BibTex exported fine in Safari but JSON export did nothing.

Let me know if you need more information.

Thanks for the details and logs, @zhao.paperpile. The team was able to identify the issue, a fix cannot be prioritized immediately but is now on their queue of issues to address. I think we can generate a JSON file of your library for you and share it via email, let me know if that’s OK and we will get it to you by Monday.

Thanks @vicente. Great to hear that the team was able to identify the issue. Yes, if you can please send the JSON file via email, that would be fantastic.
