Using Paperpile across multiple machines without Google Drive

I think it might be helpful to be able to configure location where PDFs are stored. This way I can choose a specific folder, or a Dropbox folder on my computer.

On the other hand, if I use Chrome profile, and I thought Chrome profile should be synchronized, my expectation was that PDFs stored in the profile should be available on all computers where I log into Chrome with my profile - but they are not! Is this a bug?

User libraries can be very large with 20+ GB, you can’t synchronize that using Chrome profiles. Paperpile uses Google Drive for synchronization. Like a Chrome Profile it’s also tied to your Google Account and works seamlessly in the background. Any specific reason why you don’t want to use Google Drive?

It’s not that I don’t want to use Google Drive, I just want to have a choice.

It is still somewhat confusing to me about how you are using Chrome profile. Is there a size limit on how much can be synchronized with Chrome profiles? I am sure my library at this point is no more than 1 Gb, but papers in my library that I tried are not synchronized.

There is no size limit it’s just not technically possible at all to synchronize custom user data. Google profiles only synchronize things like passwords or extensions. Google offers only one way to synchronize data and that’s through Google Drive.

Thanks for the explanation Stefan, it makes sense now.

Given the controversial investments of Google lately, is there any chance you will develop a version of Paperpile that can be used with an alternative cloud storage than google drive?

Welcome to the forum, @Hakon_Hoel. In the new Paperpile, I’m pleased to say that we plan to add support for OneDrive in the near future. We’ll keep you updated.
