VBA error 4707 in Word 16.96 on Mac — compatibility issue with Paperpile plugin?

Hi everyone,

I’m currently using Microsoft Word version 16.96 on macOS, and I’m encountering a persistent error when opening Word documents with the Paperpile plugin enabled.

The error message is:

Run-time error ‘4707’:
The dialog record field is not defined.

This dialog pops up immediately when launching Word, and it prevents me from working on any documents. After some investigation, it seems to be related to a macro trying to reference a dialog field that may not exist or is not properly initialized.

I’m wondering if this issue is related to a compatibility problem between Paperpile and Word 16.96 on Mac.

Has anyone else experienced this issue?
Any advice on how to resolve or work around this would be greatly appreciated.

Best regards,

Welcome to our forum, @M_M, and thank you for reporting this issue. Have you tried restarting Word, signing out of and back into the Word plugin, and uninstalling and reinstalling the plugin?

If all of those don’t fix the issue, can you share the log files with us?

In the Paperpile ribbon in Word, go to Settings and Tools > Send Debug Information . It should reveal a folder with a file named paperpile-logs.txt. Please send the file to us through our in-app messenger or by emailing support@paperpile.com.

Hey @M_M,
I’ve run into something similar after a recent Word update, same error, and the plugin seemed to break right on startup. In my case, fully removing the plugin (including clearing any residual files in the Word startup folder) and then reinstalling seemed to help, at least temporarily. Curious to know if it’s tied specifically to 16.96 or something deeper with the macro handling on macOS. Let us know if you find a solid fix!

Please downgrade Word to a version prior to 16.96 and reinstall the plugin. That resolved the issue for me.

You can reinstall an earlier version of Word from the link below:

Thank you for following up here, @M_M and @Karen_Brewer. Rather than downgrading to an earlier version, can you try upgrading to Office 16.97.1? An issue where third party add-ins may trigger an error when opening files was fixed in that release, but let me know if you continue to experience this error.

Hi Suzanne –

I am also having a similar issue and am running Word 16.97.2 on Mac and have done re-install cycles on the Word plug-in.

Any solutions?

Thanks!

Welcome to our forum, @Alexander_Perkins, and thank you for reaching out here and over email. Our Word specialist investigated the logs that you sent us, and the logs showed that a MacScript command needs to be enabled by your university’s IT team. Let us know how that goes for you.
