What does "Department" map to in CSL?

I’m trying to create a CSL for my PhD thesis (and to share around my university’s faculty) and everything is fine except for how other MSc and PhD Theses appear in my reference list (bibliography).

To get the Thesis type to appear in my reference list I have to type “PhD Thesis” in the “Degree” field which I now know maps to the CSL variable “genre” but… I can’t find out what CSL variable the “Department” field maps to?

The reference standard for all departments in my Faculty insist on including the department the PhD was submitted via as part of the reference.

Can anyone help? Is there a document that shows the mapping between CSL and paperpile’s own variables (as there is for zotero etc).

Any help would be extremely well received as I’m pulling my hair our here!

Hi Andy,

Sorry for the late reply. I am afraid there is no official CSL variable for “department”. Here you can find a list of all CSL variables http://docs.citationstyles.org/en/stable/specification.html#appendix-iv-variables

We could just map it to also “department” in CSL, but I first have to check if that is correctly handled by the CLS processing engine then.

is there a document that shows how paperpile variables in each reference type map to the CSL variables?

This would be invaluable for your users when they are trying to write or edit their own citation style (CSL) files to get their references to appear correct and would allow journals etc. to create paperpile relevant CSLs for authors wishing to submit papers to them, thus encouraging new users to start using Paperpile.

Hi there,

Seems load of effort for CSL editing is required. Anyway, this information is really useful.

I’m now working on customising my own CSL for writing up my PhD thesis as well. Is it worth putting this somewhere easier to access i.e. Help/FAQ?
