Hi,
I exported a google doc in word keeping the links, and (after edits from collaborators) reimported in gDocs to add more references. However, although the citations and links are visible, the compiler fails to update styles (Whoops — something went wrong while formatting your document. Please try again or contact support). Has this been observed before?

Unfortunately yes. SInce a couple of weeks Google Docs has problems importing from Word. In particular page breaks from Word cause problems for Paperpile (and any other add-on trying to read the Google Doc programatically)
Can you check if you have page breaks and remove them form your document (replace them with Google Docs page breaks).
