The current function of the toolbar is very bad for discoverability, as buttons pop into existence after selecting an entry in the list, rather than being disabled.
Nothing selected:
Entry selected:
Those items should always be present, but disabled when they are not appropriate.

Thanks for the feedback Gabriel. That’s by design.
It’s always a tradeoff of discoverability and complexity of the UI. Here we clearly decided to keep functionality hidden until users actually need it.
It’s not an uncommon pattern, e.g. GMail’s toolbar works the same and is used by 1.8 billion people.
I’m fine with this choice if you fix

Sometimes I want to directly copy a specific citation after searching, I would expect to be able to do so by clicking the “three dots” button which shows up on hover:

However, those options are not there.
Instead, I need to select the entry, and suddenly new toolbar buttons appear, including a copy citation button.
